Say goodbye to print issues.

An old saying is, “All good things must come to an end.”

Perhaps, for the Albany Student Press, the end is near.

Recently, a decision was made that beginning in the 2015-16 academic year, the Albany Student Press will transform into an online-only platform.

“It was a decision we didn’t want to make, but it was a decision we needed to make,” Albany Student Press editor-in-chief Michelle Checchi said.

“Long term, this should help us generate more content and help us solve our financial situation,” Albany Student Press managing editor Kassie Parisi said. “We have been running on a loss for years, and this should help us fix that.”

Following 99 years of continuous printing, the Albany Student Press will no longer produce a print issue.

“Online publications are the way of the future,” Parisi said.

“Our content has been great lately, and we need to be sure to get it to the largest possible audience,” Checchi said. “Our website has a wider range of readers than our print issue.”

Lately, newsstands around campus are seen with hundreds of copies of the ASP weeks after they are published.

Some estimates say that nearly half of all the issues printed don’t get picked up by readers and just sit on newsstands until they are recycled or thrown out.

Longtime readers of the Albany Student Press may be disappointed that the ASP will not be printed for what was scheduled to be the 100th anniversary of the ASP’s first printing in 1916.

Only a few issues of the Albany Student Press remain to be printed this year, before being scrapped for good.

Last issues of the Albany Student Press will be published on Tuesday, May 5.

This April Fools joke was brought to you by the Albany Student Press and isn’t true. The Albany Student Press will print on as always.
