Lots of power for a low price: Nokia Lumia 822

Nokia’s Lumia 822 for Verizon offers you the essentials in a phone including 4G Speed, NFC, and expandable memory.  Its design however is very basic and lacks any flare to set it apart from the competition.

The 822’s screen is very sharp.  Its AMOLED display allows Windows’ Live Tiles to reach their full potential and provides for great visuals.  Pictures also look great on the phone with an 8MP main camera and a 1.2MP vanity camera.  The camera incorporates Carl Zeiss optics which allows for sharp colors and high picture quality.  All this would be for nothing if it did not have the speed and processing power to run everything.  Fortunately this is not an issue with its 1.5 GHz dual core processor making sure the phone extremely responsive to your every command.

The place that the Lumia falls short is its design.  First impression of the phone was its very heavy feel in your hands when you are using it.  The corners on the phone are rounded and the edges around the phone are relatively square.  This style gives the phone a block like feel that is anything but trendy.  A positive side on the design front is the removable back cover that gives you access to a removable battery and an SD card slot capable of boosting your phone’s memory up to 64 GB above the standard 16 GB of internal storage.

Windows mobile has also been getting more and more apps in their store every day.  Though it is not as extensive as Android or Apple, the essentials like Facebook, YouTube, and even a few cool Nokia apps such as City Lens which gives you an augmented overlay using your phones camera of nearby restaurants, landmarks, and other important places.

While the Lumia 822 was able to hold its own in the hardware department, in the end the phone’s boring design may be its downfall.  With a $49.99 price tag however, some people may be able to look past this as it presents a low cost alternative to competitors.
