ALBANY, N.Y. \u2013<\/strong> The University at Albany softball team played its final regular season home game of the year on Sunday, defeating conference newcomer UMass-Lowell (9-34, 1-13), and earning a three-game sweep of the River Hawks.\u00a0 The game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning after UAlbany (25-10, 11-3) took a 9-0 lead.\u00a0 The Danes celebrated the four seniors on the roster before yesterday\u2019s doubleheader with a traditional senior day ceremony, and they were able to walk off Albany Field for the last time on a high note.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brittany MacFawn<\/a> (14-5) started the game on the mound for UAlbany, her second start of this series.\u00a0 In her final time on the mound at Albany Field, MacFawn worked a no-hitter, pitching 5.0 innings, striking out six and walking three.\u00a0 Jess Tate<\/a>, playing first base today, provided the spark on the offensive end, hitting two home runs with five RBIs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vicky McFarland<\/a> led off the game with a double to left center.\u00a0 Kelly Costello<\/a> followed with a walk.\u00a0 Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Maggie Cocks<\/a>.\u00a0 After Elizabeth Snow<\/a> flied out to right, Charlise Castro<\/a> hit a single up the middle, driving in both McFarland and Costello, giving UAlbany a 2-0 lead.\u00a0 Castro then stole second, and was driven in when Marlin Solano<\/a> hit a single to left.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Danes loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second inning, only to have Snow fly out in foul territory to UMass-Lowell\u2019s first baseman.\u00a0 Leading off the bottom of the third, Castro hit a home run to center field in the first at-bat against the River Hawks\u2019 new pitcher.\u00a0 Solano then grounded out to second, before Lauren Alcorn<\/a> worked a walk and Caitlin Cooper<\/a> hit a single through the left side.\u00a0 Tate came up and hit her first home run of the game, giving UAlbany a 7-0 lead.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a scoreless fourth inning, UAlbany scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth off of UMass-Lowell\u2019s third pitcher of the game.\u00a0 Cooper led off the inning after her at-bat in the bottom of the fourth was left incomplete when Solano was called out for leaving second base early.\u00a0 Cooper worked a leadoff walk, bring Tate to the plate.\u00a0 Tate hit a home run in her second consecutive at-bat, ending the game for the Danes 9-0.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the nine spot in the lineup, Tate hit 3-3 with two home runs, two runs scored, five RBIs, and one double.\u00a0 Castro hit 2-3 with two runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base.\u00a0 Costello hit 2-2 with a walk, one run scored, and one stolen base.\u00a0 And Solano hit 2-3 with one RBI.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the home games on the regular season schedule concluded, the Danes will hit the road for their remaining seven.\u00a0 The home stretch begins with a doubleheader rematch against Siena on Tuesday, April 29.\u00a0 On Wednesday, April 30, the Danes will play a rematch doubleheader against Army.\u00a0 Finally, the team will close out the season in Baltimore next weekend for a three-game set against UMBC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
