Outdoor Track Wraps Last Chance Meet; Bowen Second In Panama<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Last Chance Meet Results<\/span><\/p>\n

ALBANY, N.Y. \u2013<\/strong> The University at Albany outdoor track program concluded its third and final home meet of the 2014 season on Saturday, the Purple & Gold Last Chance Meet.\u00a0 With two weeks between conference championships and IC4A and ECAC Championships, the Danes used this meet, as the name would suggest, as a final opportunity to hit qualifying standards to keep individual seasons going.\u00a0 At stake for UAlbany athletes were berths into IC4A and ECAC Championships and NCAA East Regional Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n

Field events began at 2:00 p.m. with the men\u2019s hammer, women\u2019s javelin, and women\u2019s pole vault.\u00a0 Simon Cleary<\/a> placed fifth in the men\u2019s hammer with a throw of 159\u2019-9\u201d.\u00a0 Veleisha Walker<\/a>, the school record holder in the event, placed first in the women\u2019s javelin with a throw of 139\u2019-5\u201d, a new meet record.\u00a0 Katie Dowd<\/a> placed second, throwing 136\u2019-8\u201d, a new personal best that also hit the ECAC qualifying standard.\u00a0 Mary Adeyeye placed fourth, throwing 84\u2019-10\u201d, and Allie Trezza<\/a> placed fifth, throwing 79\u2019-9\u201d.\u00a0 Paige Vadnais<\/a> tied for third in the women\u2019s pole vault, clearing 11\u2019-1.75\u201d, a new personal best.\u00a0 ToniAnn Werner placed fifth, clearing 10\u2019-8\u201d, also a new personal best.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the first run of field events were the women\u2019s hammer, men\u2019s javelin, men\u2019s pole vault, and women\u2019s long jump.\u00a0 Lauren Lopano<\/a> won the women\u2019s hammer, throwing 155\u2019-2\u201d.\u00a0 Phillip Udeogu was second in the men\u2019s javelin with a throw of 172\u2019-6\u201d, a new personal best.\u00a0 Anthony D\u2019Angelo placed fourth, throwing 167\u2019-11\u201d.\u00a0 Alfonso Scannapieco<\/a> placed second in the men\u2019s pole vault, clearing a height of 15\u2019-9\u201d.\u00a0 Donald DiBari tied for fifth, clearing 14\u2019-3.25\u201d.\u00a0 Aiyanna James<\/a> won the women\u2019s long jump in 17\u2019-6.25\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The third wave of field events included the women\u2019s discus, men\u2019s shot put, and men\u2019s long jump.\u00a0 Lopano repeated her victory in the hammer by winning the women\u2019s discus with a throw of 142\u2019-5\u201d, which is a new personal best and ECAC qualifying mark.\u00a0 Samantha Kosa<\/a> finished fourth, throwing 122\u2019-2\u201d.\u00a0 Abel Gilet<\/a> placed fifth in the men\u2019s shot put with a throw of 47\u2019-10\u201d.\u00a0 Youssef Benzamia won the men\u2019s long jump in 22\u2019-3.5\u201d.\u00a0 Justyce Pollitt was third in 21\u2019-5.5\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The field events then shifted to the men\u2019s discus, women\u2019s shot put, women\u2019s triple jump, and women\u2019s high jump.\u00a0 Gilet placed third in the men\u2019s discus, throwing 148\u2019-11\u201d.\u00a0 Jonathan Eustache was fifth with a throw of 143\u2019.\u00a0 Janice Johnson<\/a> placed second in the women\u2019s shot put with a throw of 42\u2019-4.25\u201d.\u00a0 Kosa, the school record holder, was third, throwing 41\u2019-6.75\u201d.\u00a0 Sol\u00e8ne Bastien<\/a> was second in the women\u2019s triple jump with a mark of 38\u2019-9.75\u201d.\u00a0 James was fourth in 36\u2019-5.75\u201d, her first time competing in the event as a collegian.\u00a0 T\u2019Sian Haywood was fifth, jumping 35\u2019-2\u201d.\u00a0 Min Pacella<\/a> placed third in the women\u2019s high jump, clearing 5\u2019-5.25\u201d, which tied the top two finishers.\u00a0 Ashley Grant<\/a> placed fifth, clearing 5\u2019-3.75\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The field events concluded with the men\u2019s triple jump and the men\u2019s high jump.\u00a0 Christopher Stephenson placed second in the men\u2019s triple jump, recording a mark of 47\u2019-2.5\u201d.\u00a0 Matthew Campbell<\/a> won the men\u2019s high jump, clearing 6\u2019-07\u201d.\u00a0 Stephenson and Kingsley Ogbonna tied for second with three other competitors, clearing 6\u2019-5.5\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The track events began at 4:15 p.m., following a brief ceremony to celebrate and recognize the 2014 senior class.\u00a0 The first event that fielded UAlbany athletes was the 1,500, where Silvia Del Fava<\/a> and Valentina Talevi<\/a> earned a sweep of the top two places in the women\u2019s race.\u00a0 Del Fava finished in 4:40.92, and Talevi finished in 4:42.77.\u00a0 Both times are personal bests.\u00a0 Christopher Buchanan placed fourth in the men\u2019s race, finishing in 4:01.35.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next final event on the track was the 400.\u00a0 Kamilah Williams<\/a> placed second in the women\u2019s race in 56.14, a new personal best that was also under the old facility record.\u00a0 UAlbany swept the top three places in the men\u2019s race.\u00a0 Jonathan Santana<\/a> took first in 47.78, breaking his own facility record.\u00a0 Jason Tomlinson was second in 48.12, and Taariq Jones<\/a> was third in 48.53.\u00a0 The same trio swept the top three places in the 400 at last week\u2019s America East Outdoor Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kahlia Taylor<\/a> placed seventh in the women\u2019s 100 in 12.70, after qualifying second in 12.47.\u00a0 On the men\u2019s side, Kareem Morris<\/a> placed third in 10.72, after qualifying third in 10.78.\u00a0 Derek Boland was seventh in the finals in 11.03, after qualifying seventh in 11.20.\u00a0 UAlbany volunteer coach Junior Burnett<\/a> placed second in 10.62, after qualifying first in 10.64.<\/span><\/p>\n

The top four qualifiers in the women\u2019s 100 hurdles were UAlbany athletes.\u00a0 Tynelle Taylor-Chase<\/a> qualified first in 14.22.\u00a0 Michelle Anthony<\/a> qualified second in 14.57.\u00a0 CiCi Simon qualified third in 14.78.\u00a0 And Paige Vadnais<\/a> qualified fourth in 14.99.\u00a0 Only Simon and Vadnais ran in the finals, with Simon winning in 14.49, a new personal best, and Vadnais placing second in 14.55, also a personal best.\u00a0 No UAlbany men ran in the men\u2019s 110 hurdles, which did not feature a qualifying round.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kathryn Fanning<\/a> led a UAlbany sweep of the top three places in the women\u2019s 800.\u00a0 Fanning won in 2:10.55, breaking her own facility record with a personal best for the open race.\u00a0 Brianne Bellon<\/a> was second in 2:10.64, and Dominique Claudio<\/a> was third in 2:15.16.\u00a0 The men duplicated the women\u2019s feat in their race.\u00a0 John DeLallo<\/a> won and set a new facility record and personal best in 1:50.37.\u00a0 Dylan Lowry<\/a> also ran a personal best to finish second in 1:51.39.\u00a0 And Raymond Farinella<\/a> finished third in 1:54.32, a personal best as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aderinsola Ajala<\/a> won the women\u2019s 400 hurdles in 1:01.55.\u00a0 On the men\u2019s side, Jeremiah Obeng-Agyapong<\/a> finished first in a new personal best and facility record 52.14.\u00a0 Larry Ramirez followed in second place with a time of 53.10, also a personal best.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jillian Haynes<\/a> placed second in the women\u2019s 200 in 24.92, one-hundredth behind the winner.\u00a0 Morris took second in the men\u2019s race in 21.46.\u00a0 Santana was fourth in 21.79, and Winston McCormack<\/a> Jr. was fifth in 21.93.\u00a0 Burnett won the race in 21.35.<\/span><\/p>\n

No current UAlbany athletes competed in either the women\u2019s or the men\u2019s 3,000 steeplechase.\u00a0 But alumna Laura Cummings placed second for the women in 10:22.58, and alumni Ricardo Estremera<\/a> and Peter Rowell finished first and second in the men\u2019s race, running 9:26.04 and 9:56.36 respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

The final event on the track was the 5,000.\u00a0 Jessica Donohue<\/a> finished third for the women in 18:00.43.\u00a0 Molly Pezzulo<\/a> was fourth in 18:18.93.\u00a0 On the men\u2019s side, Jonathan Moore<\/a> tied for fifth, finishing in 15:50.54.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in Panama City, Alexander Bowen<\/a> was competing in the Panamanian National Championships in an effort to make Panama\u2019s national squad.\u00a0 He has already set the national record in the high jump, with his 7\u2019-1\u201d effort from America East Outdoor Championships, his first competition following the acceptance of his dual-citizenship.\u00a0 This weekend, Bowen jumped 6\u2019-8.75\u201d to take second place, but he still earned his spot on the national team.\u00a0 Bowen will continue competing for Panama in a number of meets through November.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlex told me his legs were a little tired during the competition,\u201d said assistant coach Todd Wolin<\/a>, \u201cbecause he was running around Panama City for two days wrapping up some final things with the citizenship process.\u00a0 But he made the team and he\u2019ll keep competing for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bowen will reunite with his teammates on Monday as they begin to prepare for championship season.\u00a0 IC4A and ECAC Championships begin Friday, May 16 at Princeton University.\u00a0 Most of the seniors will not be in attendance due to their commencement ceremony.\u00a0 Afterwards, any athletes who have qualified will compete in the NCAA East Regional Championships in Jacksonville, Florida, starting on May 29.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
