Results<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\"><strong>ALBANY, N.Y. \u2013<\/strong> Conference championships are over, and the Last Chance Meet has been run.\u00a0 All that remains for many University at Albany outdoor track athletes are IC4A and ECAC Championships this weekend, taking place at Princeton University from Friday, May 16 through Sunday, May 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cAt this point in the season,\u201d said Director of Track &amp; Field and Cross Country <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D850147%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Roberto Vives<\/a>, \u201cwe are trying to get as many athletes as possible qualified for regionals.\u00a0 And, if they are already qualified, improve their standing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cThe men\u2019s 4\u00d7100 relay, for example,\u201d Vives continued, \u201cwill hopefully have two opportunities to run this weekend.\u00a0 They are running without <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D205086925%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Kareem Morris<\/a>, but they are still a strong team without him, and they should be able to hit about 40.3 or 40.2, in that range.\u00a0 That should be enough to qualify.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">Morris, like many of his fellow seniors, will be attending their commencement ceremony, which conflicts with the championships this weekend.\u00a0 Because of this, a regular occurrence on the outdoor calendar, the outdoor IC4A and ECAC Championships are approached differently than their indoor counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cIndoors we approach these meets with more of a team mentality, because we look to place highly in the team title,\u201d Vives said.\u00a0 \u201cOutdoors, because of scheduling conflicts, we\u2019re looking more individually, to get people qualified for later in the season.\u00a0 But, if we qualify athletes to regionals in enough events, the teams could finish pretty well overall as a consequence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">Another concern for the coaches and the athletes is having such a high-intensity meet coincide with the tail end of final exams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cTraining becomes tough with finals,\u201d Vives said.\u00a0 \u201cSo we try to get the work done early in the week, then send them on their own later.\u00a0 If they missed a quality workout on Tuesday, we\u2019ll try to have them do it Wednesday.\u00a0 But there are a lot of variables during exam week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">The men\u2019s 400 features three athletes, <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D204858796%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Jonathan Santana<\/a>, <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D205680834%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Taariq Jones<\/a>, and Jason Tomlinson, who, according to Coach Vives, can all hit in the low 47s if they have a good day.\u00a0 They will also run on the 4\u00d7400 relay looking for a regional berth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201c3:10 is about what it takes to qualify a 4\u00d7400,\u201d said Vives, \u201cand the men are shooting for about a 3:09.\u00a0 They ran 3:11 in Puerto Rico back in March, so it\u2019s possible, with the right race.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\"><a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D205693954%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">James Sommer<\/a> will be running the men\u2019s steeplechase on the same track and at the same meet where the school record was set.\u00a0 The coaching staff thinks Sommer can run about 10 seconds faster than his best time so far this season, 9:12.00.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cThey\u2019ll run the steeplechase under the lights, so the atmosphere will be great,\u201d said Vives.\u00a0 \u201cJames could really pop a big race in that environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\"><a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D206180960%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Silvia Del Fava<\/a> is running the 5,000, as preparation work for the 10,000 later in the season.\u00a0 Though it will not be her primary event going forward, she has her sights set on her own school record, which she narrowly set at America East Outdoor Championships with a time of 16:48.18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\"><a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D205276374%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Veleisha Walker<\/a>, school record holder in the women\u2019s javelin, could potentially throw 45.00m this weekend.\u00a0 <a class=\"biolink\" Lopano<\/a> is expected to continue to improve in the women\u2019s discus.\u00a0 And the coaches are hoping <a class=\"biolink\" Gilet<\/a> can go out with a personal best in the shot put, competing in his last meet as a senior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\"><a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D205275903%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Alexander Bowen<\/a> is the defending champion in the high jump, and will look to claim his second consecutive title.\u00a0 He will face Cornell\u2019s Montez Blair, his long-time in-state rival, and Pennsylvania\u2019s Maalik Reynolds, with whom he tied in height in the championship section of the high jump at Penn Relays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">In the men\u2019s 800, <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D205693122%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Dylan Lowry<\/a> is a wild card.\u00a0 He\u2019s been improving all season and the coaching staff doesn\u2019t anticipate that trend derailing this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cDylan has been amazing all year,\u201d said Vives.\u00a0 \u201cWith the right race, the right heat, I wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see him run under 1:50.\u00a0 He\u2019s a competitor.\u00a0 He\u2019ll go after it if it\u2019s there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">One final concern regarding potential regional qualifiers is the fact that many of the major conference championships will also take place this weekend, so some of the best athletes in the country will be looking at their last opportunity to continue their seasons in their own conference meet, with conference titles at stake.\u00a0 Considering the manner in which athletes qualify for regionals (the top 48 in each event qualify), strong performances elsewhere could bump other quality performances out of contention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">Any athletes who have qualified for regionals will continue their season after this weekend.\u00a0 NCAA East Regionals take place at the end of the month in Jacksonville, Florida, from Thursday, May 29 through Saturday, May 31.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
