After favorable initial testing, the game is slightly tweaked, with the most major change the renaming of the game to \u201cPac-Man\u201d. Midway, Namco\u2019s U.S. distributor, thought that vandals would alter the letter \u201cP\u201d to an \u201cF\u201d. While the game was not officially released until later in the year (<a title=\"Pac-Mac Fever Begins\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fthisdayintechhistory.com%2F10%2F10%2Fpac-mac-fever-begins%2F\">October 10th in the US<\/a>), the creators of the game consider <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wired.com%2Fgamelife%2F2010%2F05%2Fpac-man-30-years%2F\" target=\"_blank\">May 22 to be Pac-Man\u2019s birthday<\/a> because it was the first time the game was shown to the general public.<\/p>\n<p>One of the little known facts about Pac-Man is that it was specifically developed to be popular with women. Most video games of that time had a war or sports theme to them and women were generally not interested in those games. Pac-Mac would be the first game popular with both men and women and was the first video game to become a social phenomenon.
