{"id":13414,"date":"2014-12-16T18:45:58","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T18:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.techiteens.com\/review\/ualbany-a-leading-suny-for-study-abroad-programs-4\/"},"modified":"2014-12-16T18:45:58","modified_gmt":"2014-12-16T18:45:58","slug":"ualbany-a-leading-suny-for-study-abroad-programs-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.techiteens.com\/review\/ualbany-a-leading-suny-for-study-abroad-programs-4\/","title":{"rendered":"UAlbany, a leading SUNY for study abroad programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"post-3241\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><em>By Meg Dwyer<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Contributing Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>theaspnews@gmail.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Originally published: 12\/9\/14<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Published online: 12\/15\/14<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> With 578 University at Albany students studying abroad during the 2013-14 academic year, UAlbany has become one of the largest providers of study abroad options within the SUNY system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> According to Ren\u00e9e DeCelle, Assistant Director of UAlbany Study Abroad and Exchanges, the primary mission of the Office of International Education is to promote global awareness and international cooperation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> As part of the SUNY Study Abroad Consortium, UAlbany students can participate in programs run by any other four-year SUNY school and remain registered at UAlbany the whole time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> \u201cWe offer over 130 study abroad programs in more than 40 countries and on every continent,\u201d DeCelle said. \u201cBy working with the SUNY Study Abroad Consortium, we can give students access to more than 600 programs offered SUNY-wide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> Celine Hogan, a freshman at UAlbany, will be studying abroad next fall in Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> \u201cThe study abroad office here helped me a lot,\u201d said Hogan. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to stay with a host<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">family so they provided me with<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">a list of contacts that could help me find a different place to live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> Hogan looks forward to backpacking across South America during her semester abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> \u201cOur students\u2019 experiences abroad are overwhelmingly positive,\u201d DeCelle said. \u201cWe find that many students gain a sense of independence and self-reliance that is difficult to teach in a classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> UAlbany students have described their experiences abroad as \u201camazing, life-changing and eye-opening,\u201d said DeCelle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> Meagan Sagliocca, a recent graduate of UAlbany, spent a summer studying in London and seems to agree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> \u201cMy experience abroad gave me a grasp on other cultures that I never would have learned in my classes,\u201d Sagliocca said. \u201cI would 100 percent recommend going abroad to anyone who is considering it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> One of Sagliocca\u2019s best memories abroad is seeing the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum during her time in London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> UAlbany\u2019s study abroad tradition dates back to the 1960s.
