The cause of the disaster was a piece of foam insulation the size of a small briefcase that broke off the\u00a0<a title=\"Space Shuttle external tank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Shuttle_external_tank\">external tank<\/a> during\u00a0launch and struck the leading edge of the left wing. This damaged the\u00a0Shuttle&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Shuttle_thermal_protection_system\" target=\"_blank\">thermal protection system (TPS)<\/a>, which protected it from heat generated by the atmosphere during re-entry.
