ALBANY, N.Y<\/strong>. \u2013 The Great Danes women\u2019s soccer team played its first game of the year at Bob Ford Field in front of a vibrant crowd, but fell to Columbia 3-0 on Friday night.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the third minute, Chelsea Ryan got fouled inside the 18-yard box during a corner kick to draw a penalty kick.\u00a0 She kicked the ball to the left side of the net to give Columbia (3-2) a 1-0 lead.<\/span><\/p>\n

UAlbany (1-7) protected against a couple of shots and got its own opportunity in the seventh minute, but Alexa Schneider<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s shot was saved by Columbia keeper Grace Redmon.<\/span><\/p>\n

After 14 minutes had elapsed, the Great Danes got looks on offense.\u00a0 A couple of looping shots intended for the high part of the cage from Schneider and Leanne Miller<\/a><\/strong> were saved by a jumping Redmon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aubrey VanGorder<\/a><\/strong> continued the attack, getting a look from outside the box in the 26th<\/sup> minute, but another Redmon save kept UAlbany off the board.<\/span><\/p>\n

Columbia got a corner kick opportunity in the 34th<\/sup> minute.\u00a0 Torie Goode put the ball into the box.\u00a0 After a kick by Beverly Leon and header by Natalie, Ryan headed the ball into the net for a 2-0 Lions lead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schneider tried again in the 37th<\/sup> minute with a shot, but again Redmon was in place to make the save.\u00a0 The Great Danes went into halftime down two goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

UAlbany played aggressively in the early part of the second half.\u00a0 VanGorder put a corner kick into the box in minute 50, which was headed by Kari Quinn<\/a><\/strong> into the arms of Redmon.<\/span><\/p>\n

The following minute, Columbia got its own corner kick.\u00a0 Maya Marder kicked the ball into the goal box.\u00a0 Ryan headed the ball into the near side part of the net for her third goal, making it 3-0 Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The home team tried to get back in the latter part of the second half, with shots from Anna Hogan<\/a><\/strong> and Caitlyn Paltsios<\/a><\/strong> missing the cage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jackie Ubert<\/a><\/strong> entered the game in goal for UAlbany in the 72nd<\/sup> minute, finishing the game.\u00a0 She did not allow a goal and made two saves.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Great Danes got just one shot off in the last 18 minutes, a high attempt by Schneider, and fell to Columbia 3-0.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schneider led UAlbany with four shots, putting three of them on goal.\u00a0 Quinn had three shots, with one saved by the keeper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ryan earned her first three goals of the year for Columbia.\u00a0 Leon, Marder and Melo all got an assist.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Great Danes will play their final non-conference regular season game on Sunday at 1 p.m. on the road against Rhode Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
