By using a 1.8\u2033 drive, the <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FIPod\" target=\"_blank\">iPod<\/a> was significantly smaller than competing MP3 players of the time. The Firewire port allowed simultaneous charging and high-speed music synchronization, innovative for its time. At the time, the original iPod only worked with Macintosh computers. However, the popularity of the iPod among Windows users \u2013 who had to hack together a solution to use it with their computers \u2013 prompted Apple to release a Windows compatible version in the second generation of iPods.
