The cause of the disaster was a piece of foam insulation the size of a small briefcase that broke off the\u00a0<a title=\"Space Shuttle external tank\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FSpace_Shuttle_external_tank\">external tank<\/a> during\u00a0launch and struck the leading edge of the left wing. This damaged the\u00a0Shuttle\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FSpace_Shuttle_thermal_protection_system\" target=\"_blank\">thermal protection system (TPS)<\/a>, which protected it from heat generated by the atmosphere during re-entry.
