HONOLULU \u2013<\/strong> The hosting University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors held the University at Albany baseball team scoreless Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium, overcoming the Great Danes, 9-0. With the loss, UAlbany fell to 0-2 on the season, while Hawaii improved to 2-4 overall.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018Bows outhit UAlbany 10-5 and used four Great Dane errors to their advantage in the shutout. Offensively for the Danes, redshirt senior Brian Bullard<\/a> led the squad with two hits, including a double. Craig Lepre<\/a>, Josh Nethaway<\/a>, and D.J. Hoagboon<\/a> each had one hit apiece.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the mound, junior Cameron Sorgie<\/a> (0-1) took the loss, tossing 1.2 innings. He allowed six runs (four earned), five hits, and struck out two. In his UAlbany debut, Daniel Castro<\/a> held the \u2018Bows to two runs (one earned) and four hits in 4.1 frames of middle relief. Redshirt junior Joey Moore<\/a> threw the final two innings out of the pen, allowing one run, one hit, and struck out one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hawaii built a quick 6-0 lead in the first two innings of play, scoring three in each of their first two turns at the plate. In the bottom of the first, the \u2018Bows used a leadoff error, followed by a pair of singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly to take the lead for good.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second, Hawaii strung together three hits, as well as used a fielding error and a wild pitch to cross the plate three more times.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rainbow Warriors tacked on single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings for the 9-0 final score.<\/span><\/p>\n

UAlbany\u2019s best chance to break up the shutout came in the fifth inning when Evan Harasta<\/a> led off with a walk, Hoagboon followed with a single to left field, and Jeff VonMoser<\/a> walked to load the bases with two outs. However, the runners were left stranded as Hawaii starting pitcher Jarrett Arakawa worked his way out of the jam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arakawa (1-0) earned the win, throwing six scoreless innings, allowing four hits, three walks, and struck out two. Throwing the final three innings, Josh Elms took the save, holding the Danes to one hit.<\/span><\/p>\n

UAlbany and Hawaii continue the series Saturday at 1:05 p.m. HST (6:05 p.m. EST).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
