class=\"c24\"><strong>ALBANY, N.Y. \u2013<\/strong> Less than one week after opening competition for the 2014 outdoor track season, the University at Albany will travel to Texas to participate in two meets late this week.\u00a0 The big meet on the schedule is the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, hosted by the University of Texas at Austin.\u00a0\u00a0 The other meet, the Bobcat Invitational, is hosted by Texas State University in San Marcos, about 40 minutes away from Austin by car.\u00a0 The Bobcat Invitational runs at the same time as the Texas Relays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">Indicative of its name, UAlbany will focus primarily on its relay events at the Texas Relays.\u00a0 The men and women will each run a stacked 4\u00d7100 and distance medley relay, and the men will run a stacked 4\u00d7800.\u00a0 The men\u2019s 4\u00d7800 indoors ran the fourth fastest time in the country at IC4A Championships, when they placed third with a 7:26.02.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cThe 4\u00d7800 will run Thursday night,\u201d said Director of Track &amp; Field and Cross Country <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D850147%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Roberto Vives<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cWe think a school record is possible with this group.\u00a0 Friday, most of the men\u2019s 4\u00d7800 will return to run the DMR, which, along with the women\u2019s DMR, we hope can be competitive.\u00a0\u00a0 The women may have a shot at that school record as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cAs for the 4\u00d7100,\u201d Vives continued, \u201cwe like to work a pool of six athletes, so we have flexibility if we need it.\u00a0 That\u2019s why you\u2019ll see slightly different squads from our first meet.\u00a0 The women, in particular, need to work on stick passes, but we\u2019re hoping both teams can take advantage of the warmer weather, which is needed for this event.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">But it\u2019s not just the relays that will get work in at the meet.\u00a0 Many athletes entered in the meet will run an open event in addition to their relay, but a few will only do open events.\u00a0 <a class=\"biolink\" Scannapieco<\/a> will compete in the high jump and pole vault respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">For Bowen, he will once again face a field comprised of a number of the competitors he faced at indoor nationals, marking the third time in his last four meets he has jumped against the country\u2019s best competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">The Bobcat Invitational, running concurrently with the Texas Relays, provides an opportunity for other athletes to see live competition in warm weather early in the season.\u00a0 The multis athletes, <a class=\"biolink\" Catera<\/a>, will use the meet to compete in the first heptathlon and decathlon respectively, in an effort to hit the necessary qualifying marks for championships season, so they don\u2019t have to continue competing in the grueling event chasing the standard.\u00a0 A similar sentiment exists for the 400m hurdlers, who are looking for a qualifying mark for the postseason to eliminate the need to run the grueling event more than they have to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cIC4As and ECACs only take the top 16 athletes, so it\u2019s important to get a good mark down when you have the opportunity,\u201d said assistant coach <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D857707%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Todd Wolin<\/a>.\u00a0 Assuming he qualifies, Matt likely won\u2019t do the full decathlon again until IC4A\u2019s, while <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D205303612%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Nick Mattera<\/a> will be our guy at conferences.\u00a0 But all that could change, of course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">Both meets will be used to sharpen the hurdle pool for a potential shuttle hurdle relay at the Penn Relays in late April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cWith Tynelle, Michelle, CiCi Simon, and ToniAnn Werner, we want to have a solid women\u2019s shuttle hurdle relay for Penn,\u201d said Wolin.\u00a0 \u201cThe men could put one together too, with Matt and Alfonso, and with Jose Farley and <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252F%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D205680829%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Rudje Beckford<\/a> getting healthy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">Bobcat also allows an opportunity for the 4\u00d7100 relay teams to run a second time over the weekend, in the event they do not qualify for finals at the Texas Relays.\u00a0 Similarly, assistant coach <a class=\"biolink\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fredirect.viglink.com%3Fkey%3D11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0%26amp%3Bu%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ualbanysports.com%252FViewArticle.dbml%253F%2526amp%253BATCLID%253D1354955%2526amp%253BDB_OEM_ID%253D15800\">Matt Jones<\/a> will use the Bobcat Invitational to get more work in for the middle distance athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">\u201cWe\u2019ve entered athletes in both meets,\u201d said Jones, \u201cjust so that if we need to, we can get them another race in, so they get the work they need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c24\">Only a small contingent of athletes is making the trip to Texas.\u00a0 Those left behind were scheduled to run at a dual meet at Dartmouth College, but the meet was cancelled due to poor conditions on the track.\u00a0 These athletes will have the weekend off, in preparation for the first UAlbany home meet since 2011, when the men will compete against UConn in the Dogfight, and the women host the Quad Meet, on April
