Softball Hosts Maine For Three-Game Set<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Game Program<\/span><\/p>\n

ALBANY, N.Y. \u2013<\/strong> In what has become an unusual circumstance for the University at Albany softball team this season, the Danes will play their second consecutive series at the regularly scheduled time, instead of having the games postponed or cancelled.\u00a0 The schedule calls for a three-game series with conference opponent Maine, in what will be UAlbany\u2019s third through fifth consecutive home games, after hosting a doubleheader with Siena earlier this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaine is a very scrappy team,\u201d said head coach Chris Cannata<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cThey play hard all the time, and our games with them are always hard fought and always close.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, UAlbany swept the three games they played at Maine.\u00a0 But Coach Cannata isn\u2019t looking to that performance to predict the outcome of the matchup this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey have a different team this year, and we have a different team this year,\u201d Cannata said.\u00a0 You can\u2019t really judge how things might go based on the games we played a year ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The uncertainty with the schedule has wreaked havoc on the progression of the team to this point in the season.\u00a0 Essentially, the Danes have had to start over twice due to long layoffs because games were cancelled or shifted.\u00a0 The second preseason tournament, the Towson Classic, was cancelled entirely because of inclement weather, meaning the Danes were off for three weeks between their last game at the Citrus Classic and their first game at the Rebel Spring Games.\u00a0 After Rebel, the Danes opened regular season play at Stony Brook, but their home opening series against Binghamton was postponed by more than a week due to inclement weather.\u00a0 Consequently, the team had another long layoff between live competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe weather has had an effect on everyone,\u201d Cannata said, \u201cso it is difficult to get a read on everything, whether it be our team or our opponents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

To Coach Cannata\u2019s point, Tuesday was the first day this season that the team was able to practice outside with ground balls.\u00a0 To this point, they had been practicing in the gym, which is useful in its own way, but doesn\u2019t offer the same benefits as practicing on an actual field.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur defense is doing okay,\u201d Cannata said.\u00a0 \u201cThe ground is wet, so it\u2019s slower.\u00a0 It\u2019s just another adjustment we have to make.\u00a0 But our pitching has been solid, which is what has kept us in games.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Coach Cannata has a different assessment of the status of the offense.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe had better at-bats against Siena,\u201d Cannata said.\u00a0 \u201cThey helped us a bit, particularly in the second game with the walks and the errors.\u00a0 In this series, I\u2019m really looking for more comfort at the plate from our hitters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are things we need to play through,\u201d Cannata continued.\u00a0 \u201cMostly, we need to actually be playing, be in game situations.\u00a0 There are things that just don\u2019t come up in the gym.\u00a0 But normally we\u2019re a team that gets better as the season goes on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This series against Maine is the second three-game set UAlbany has played this season.\u00a0 Previously, the Danes played two different opponents in one day, a doubleheader against a single opponent, or a single game in a day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to beat a team three times,\u201d Cannata said.\u00a0 \u201cEspecially a team like Maine, who is usually a playoff team.\u00a0 By the second and third games they\u2019ve seen your pitching, they\u2019ve made adjustments, and we\u2019ve made adjustments.\u00a0 The games are high intensity, and there are, usually, very few blowouts in conference play.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The series with Maine kicks off at Albany Field on Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m., followed by the second game of the doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.\u00a0 The series concludes Sunday, April 6 at 12:00 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
